An eagerly anticipated 12" single that precedes their much anticipated debut long player for Warp by BATTLES: "Atlas" in which tribal drumming is backed by Wizard of Oz munchkins on vocals in a chant-along incomprehensibilty. It's not until the drop when the guitars and bass add a bit of much needed dynamic that the guitar inflections and glam-rock beats enlarge into an infectious nursery rhyme stomp. The flip wouldn't be out of place in the sets of many a Berlin techno DJ. Not sure whether Battles recorded efforts match their impressive live effort but I look forward to the album not only for the whacked-out approach to vocals but for their heady attempts at jazz-rock-electronic fusion.

‘Atlas’ is the sparklingly new hypnotic masterpiece from the behemoth that is Battles. Battles have already established a strong word of mouth buzz from their phenomenal live reputation and 2006’s ‘EPC / BEP’ album, compiling their sought after, early releases. Battles were the highlight of 2005’s All Tomorrow’s Parties festival curated by Mars Volta, playing twice due to popular demand. They were also the most talked about band at 2006’s Truck Festival.
