The second 12" 'Opera' from BASS CLEF drops this week with 3 cuts lifted from his stonking debut album. 'Cannot be straightened' is a bottom end wobbler that requires you to wear a nappy at the soundclash such is the enormity of the faeces inducing stuttering bassline. No messin'. I can just see it now. A crowd of spliffed up ravers falling about on a dancefloor covered in doo doo. In all seriousness though this is a lot more exciting than a lot of the current dubstep gear with nods to early jungle with it's time-stretched vocal sample and tight edits on the drums. Well smart. Meanwhile 'Opera' on the flip is a dark digital monster with haunting operatic vocals giving the cut a deeper atmosphere. 'Don't Ask Me To Forgive You' starts off as a slow reggae burner and builds into an early morning bass bin buster with lots of sneaky little percussion fill adding to the funk and a sweet female vocal with delay. Quality future dub for the floor. Check it out on Blank Tapes. We have a couple of the white label promo copies knocking about and all.

What their label says...

Bass Clef’s ascendancy to cult stardom continues with this cracking bit of vinyl. Two highlights from the ’Smile Is A Curve...’ album have been chosen alongside a brand new, never heard before tune to constitue the Opera EP for your listening pleasure.
’Cannot Be Straightened’ leaps from your speakers, slaps you across the cheeks, then tickles your balls all in one fluid movement that will leave you in a confused but pleasant daze.
’Opera’ is a slightly more refined affair, but only just. Intricate programming of beats paired with a glorious synth
melody make this an electro-boogie monster with a big heart.
’Don’t Ask Me To Forgive You’ takes a more melancholic angle on the whole wonky dubstep thing. A bit like
’Careless Whisper’ re-imagined by Throbbing Gristle.
Both ’Opera’ and ’Cannot Be Straightened’ have already been played on Radio 1 (by Mary Ann Hobbs and Huw Stephens), before even being selected as tracks for a single.
