Oh God. Although they've once or twice come up with some great records I often think that Tortoise are taking the piss. Same with Bonnie Prince Billy. It always seems as though he's laughing into his sleeve at the gullibility of his loyal fans. Well now they've both got together to take the piss out of the record buying public again with a covers album that has about 4 decent tunes to 6 useless ones. Top of the 'good' pile comes 'Love is Love' by Lungfish - a great tune made even better by Bonny Prince Billy's heartfelt moan. They ruin Bruce Springsteen's 'Thunder Road' amid a river of twiddly guitar solo's and Yes like whiny keyboards....and whatever 'Pancho' by David Hanner is supposed to be , I was ready to march right round to Will Oldham's house and yank his beard off its hinges with my bare hands. Still, nice versions of songs by Richard Thompson and Quixotic end the album on a high note and you'll forget all about the indecipherable child like sprawl of Devo's 'That's Pep' that comes before. So a mixed bag then.........On Domino.

Love this record? Hate it? Tell us.
