Amon Tobin releases a remix 12" on Ninja Tune featuring all your favourites. Prefuse 73 does a typically excellent effort that could pass for a track off his recent album. Kid 606 brings dancehall into the equation. Verbal's is so-so whils Boom Bip's is probably the pick of the bunch. Doesn't really work as a whole listening experience as every track uses the same high pitch vocal effect which grates a bit after awhile but taken individually all the tracks are worthy of attention.

What their label says...

Three of the Huge Guys (that's a technical term) of US e-lectronica line up to remix 'Verbal'. Yes, it might have been better if it were four of the big names and yes it is completely true that DJ Shadow sent whores with crack pipes round to Amon's house for almost a fortnight b-e-g-g-i-n-g to be allowed to do a mix, but we refused. Instead we did our bit for international relations by inviting the wonderful and French Topo Gigio to complete our quartet. And he was the only one who could resist the urge to get a little Justin with that acoustic guitar lick…

So, first the Americans. Prefuse 73, about to release his second album on Warp, turns 'Verbal' into, erm, a Prefuse 73 tune, all stuttering, cut-up glitches occasionally expanding out into lush, sunny interludes, something like watching the sky on a windy day. Kid 606 reimagines the original as dancehall in the way only a white guy from San Francisco can, and gives us all nosebleeds in the process. Boom Bip, meanwhile, overlays a sweet, sweeping sensation, making the whole thing into the soundtrack to the moment in a film where everything is just about to go horribly wrong.

And then there's Topo Gigio, the wild card in the pack. 20 year old Adrien Rodes (signed to Melodic) more than holds his own, adding mournful electric bass to give the whole thing a little hint of New Order and lashings of atmosphere.

Great tune. Ranking remixes. Who needs hype?
