Iowa has some great things going for it. Many a Iowan(?) has left his or her mark on culture in one way or another, such as Grant Wood (the artist who painted American Gothic) and Laura Leighton (actress in Melrose Place) to name but two. It also has some absoloute zingers when it comes to laws (such as...a man with a moustache may never kiss a woman in public, and...one-armed piano players must perform for free). Great stuff as I’m sure you will agree. It doesn’t seem to be doing too badly when it comes to the old music either. Old folk-style curmudgeon Greg Brown is from Iowa, as is Brian Bell who plays the axe in nerd rock twats Weezer. Mincing into this hall of fame comes Iowa City’s Cuticle. Cuticle makes a sort of space-dance-pop-soul hybrid. He deploys vocoder and warped sickly synths to great effect. The first track creeps in with weird vocals, then becomes something like a malfunctioning house track. Lovely stuff. It’s full of cosmic oddities is this short but sweet 12”, such as the shimmering off world disco of “Night Of Romance” and the mind melting “Without Form”. Also the Matthew Dear-ism of the track called “Trickle” is a glitchy house potential classic. Great debut from an enigmatic artist who is one to watch.

What their label says...

Debut (after an EP on 100% SILK) by this Iowa City electronic maximalist. M.R.E.M. is the first purely solo Cuticle release, after working with a series of part-time collaborators, and it's freed him to let loose his wildest and weirdest impulses.
