Wow! OK, Paul Haig is a name I haven't heard in a while but a little research tells me he's had a bunch of solo material out since his heyday as singer/songwriter for the awesome Josef K. Well, Mr. Haig has been keeping it real by the looks of what I'm hearing here as 'Trip Out The Rider' sounds as fresh and lively (if not more so) than anything I've heard him do in the past. This single takes the classic post-punk blueprint to it's logical conclusion, creating a dense track built on military precise disco beats, a sweet new wave bassline, sharp guitars and rampant multi layered vocals. B-side 'Signals' takes a lusher approach with majestic synths and grand piano guiding the track into the cosmos. It sounds a little cheesy (like all good synth rock & pop of the 80's) but he's having so much fun with it that it's entirely forgivable. Like a true elder statesman he has a knack for reinventing old sounds and showing the upstarts how it should be done. Oh, the sleeve's amazing too. A real treat.
Fred Deakin gets messy with the lead track from post-punk legend Paul Haig's most recent album, turning it into a relentless indie dance floor monster. PLUS an unreleased B-side on a more laid back electronic tip verging on the balearic. All packaged in a ridiculously lavish paper cut sleeve (hand screenprinted, foil embossed and limited to 500 copies) which is rumoured to be first in a series of six seven inches.
