As it says on the inside of the handsome gatefold packaging I'm holding in my hands, Oval = Markus Popp and he's really changed up quite a lot from the records that made his name back in the 90s. Although strong hints of his glitchy past remain in the arrangements and attitude to melody, these days he's reminding me as much of current labelmates Tortoise as anyone in the abstract experimental electronica world.. Largely that's due to the general change in sound, with warm acoustic instrumentation (all played by the man himself I think?) taking the place of the barrage of mangled, nameless and tricky to identify samples. It'd be Tortoise at their most abstract, mind, but the jazzy tinge that permeates many of the tracks (that I've heard - there are nearly eighty in total across the two formats) is undoubtedly similar. It all sounds totally tidy so far but it's a mammoth set so for all I know it could go tae shite later on.. I'm sure he knows what he's doing though. Apparently the double LP features everything that's on the first CD of the CD version plus six vinyl-only tracks and the whole kaboodle in download form.. Loads to get your gnashers into!
