I've always wondered why The Vaselines didn't reform around the time that one Kurdt Kobanian was all over their tracks, it seemed like such an opportune time. Anyway, twenty years on and they've finally decided to join the 'reform and play at ATP Krew' and who can blame 'em, it looks like a good laugh. 'Sex With An X' is exactly what you'd expect, a simplistic three chord pop song with a memorable vocal line you can sing along to on first listen. I'd have preferred a little more dirgyness in the instrumentation but you know how it is when bands mature. B-side 'Roaster' more than makes up for it. It's a heavier more magical combination that reminds me why I love the band so much. The vocal hints at a psych/shoegaze angle and the guitars are totally rocking. Poor Cobain, bet he didn't consider the hidden benefits of sticking around on planet Earth. Nirvana/Vaselines/Shonen Knife tour anybody?

What their label says...

More than 20 years on (and entirely worth the wait) comes ‘Sex With An X’, the lead single from The Vaselines’ forthcoming album of the same name.

Formed in Glasgow in 1987, The Vaselines released two singles and one album and then split up in 1989 (the same week their album was released). They might have faded into obscurity but for the intervention of a certain band from Seattle.

Nirvana covered three Vaselines songs, helping to fuel a growing after-the-fact appreciation of their seedy, two-and-a-half chord garage pop manifesto.

B-side ‘Roaster’ is an exclusive non-album track.
