Static Caravan is often a mark of quality amongst the billions of records we have to wade through each week just so you, my dear reader can part with your hard earned cash on the odd lavish gem that pops through the murk. There are two this week first off is Goodnight Lenin ...well theres no way round this... and it may be a good or bad thing depending on your viewpoint but the rollicking folky tune on the A side closely resembles Mumford and Sons. You know that kind of upbeat strummy thing they do? Just like that. The B side does something similar. Men singing tuneful songs together, Oxbridge education, a mandolin, jumpers around shoulders, streams of Pimms.
Formed in the autumn of 2009, Goodnight Lenin’s songs are reminiscent of the singer songwriters of the 1960s & 1970s, whilst still being relevant to the modern day listener. Inspired by Dylan, Young and Simon & Garfunkel, they constantly strive to deliver honest, experience based lyrics that flow along into their carefully crafted sound that seamlessly crosses genres. In the beginning, Goodnight Lenin remained undiscovered until a video from a low key gig played in a friend’s kitchen surfaced online. Shortly afterwards they were booked to headline the Lunar Stage at Moseley Folk Festival where they will play immediately before another of their great inspirations - Donovan. The aptly named ‘Kitchen Tour’ was to continue throughout the start of 2010, whilst also playing shows with First Aid Kit, Darwin Deez, The Features and opening British Sea Power’s festival ‘Sing From Ye Hillsides’. They will also be playing a series of festival shows this summer. With press and word of mouth rapidly drawing attention to the band, they entered the studio to record their first single ‘Crook in the Creek’ which will be released on Static Caravan Recordings in August 2010. Despite the single not being due for release until the late summer of 2010, they were blessed to receive their inaugural radio play recently on Guy Garvey’s Finest Hour, BBC Radio 6 Music.Vinyl edition of 500 in an art edition sleeve designed by Clare E.
