Not sure what to tell you about this guy as I've never really heard his stuff before. On first listen it sounds like Tom Waits style Americana music that absorbs a little of the blues, country and folk along the way. The most distinctive thing about it is Mr. Cox's super gruff vocal delivery. From the sound of him you'd think he was some weary travellin' blues man with deeply ingrained lines scaring his bluesman face. But no, this guy looks to have benefited from a private school education and appears to be no older than 20, tops. I'm generalising but you get the idea, this guy sounds very different to how he looks. I wonder what he'll sound like when he's Tom Waits age? I wonder what he'll look like? Something to keep in mind I guess. This s/t debut is a confidently delivered LP full of (already) classic sounding tunes about bad things happening to you and drinking and all that business. Definitely of interest to you Tom Waits, Scott Walker (and the like) lovin' types. Enjoyable stuff.

What their label says...

May 3rd marks the eponymous debut album release from the
characterful troubadour that is David G Cox. Brilliant songwriting
is adorned with shades of roots: folk, blues, country, shanties
and music hall, not to mention perfect vocal harmonies.

Mr Cox politely declined offers to join both Reverend and the
Makers as guitarist and the Long Blondes as drummer, and on the
evidence of his debut, both were wise moves.

David has a style and swagger all of his own, but fans of Tom
Waits, Leonard Cohen, Spiritualized Acoustic Mainline, the
Weavers and Isobel Campbell with Mark Lanegan should find
much to like.

An itinerant soul, David has lived in Doncaster, Exeter, Oxford and Sheffield. He currently resides in Cambridge where he’s completing a PHD in black American folklore and gospel. David sites Alan Lomax as an inspiration and his passion clearly extends beyond recording into a genuine desire to understand the roots of popular song.

All three members of David’s band are ace singers. Classically-trained
vocalist Lucy Wilford regularly appears on Radio 4 and quintessential English folkster Chad Mason (provider of falsetto backing vocals) recently appeared on BBC radio for their ‘Introducing’ feature (in his solo guise).

Also present and correct on the album is Oli Horton, founder of the
burgeoning Dreamtrak studio, label and production mini empire. His previous work includes an album's worth of B-sides for Foals, Chicks on Speed's latest double LP ‘Cutting The Edge’ and as Dreamtrak Diamond Sound, he has remixed Diskjokke, Internet Forever and Gaggle.

David was previously in cult garage rock bands Fever High Rollers and
The Solution, the latter of whom supported the Coral, played a hugely well received set at the Reading festival and toured Germany. David says the time spent was a fantastic experience, but he eventually left to pursue his own vision, driven by a love for three-part harmonies from the likes of Crosby Stills and Nash and The Beatles, plus all manner of folk/roots music.
