One of post-rock's quiet fringe concerns, they've (Secretly Canadian) sold us this one as a drone record. It's rather more than that. There's a steady percussive "pulse" on most tracks which could actually fool you into thinking they had (gasp!) a DRUMKIT in the studio. Also I keep on getting rather "tuneful" passages of guitar, albeit sometimes treated, and those sodding bass guitar "lines" and erm...."lyrics" keep getting in the way. One minute you think you're listening to Tortoise, or The Chills then they remember to get their "trendy" fat bag of (admittedly great) drones out & start throwing them around the studio to mong everyone out. I think this is probably one of the first things I've heard by them and I really like it in parts. It's an atmospheric experimental rock record with some MOR dad-pop touches & some good post-rock dynamics. It's not a fucking drone record (but does possess a pocketful of sonic ephemera to be going on with till you put the Emeralds LP back on yr stereo). Press releases... I dunno....

Love this record? Hate it? Tell us.
