This week I appear to be reviewing lots of things from New Zealand. I may as well just move there. At least there will be some orcs to keep me company (my only true friends) Anyway Crude Futures is the quartet's brand new album following on from their debut monster 'Friendly Fires & 000 EP'. They bounce and jerk their way across 9 tracks and the styles are all over the shop. There's plenty of math rock, shouting, weird time signatures and post rock in the mix.... Oh there's lots of keyboards as well i you like that kind of thing. I guess they're somewhere in between Foals and Trans Am but less exciting that either band. I guess the sum of 2 greater things don't always equal or make a better thing. Still this has it's moments and there's more energy in here than a colony of chipmunks. I wouldn't be surprised if the band are chipmunks. Do you know female chipmunks are only pregnant for a month and have 4-5 babies on average. That's some quick work if you ask me.

What their label says...

Hugely anticipated debut album for New Zealand quartet So So Modern.

The band's wide array of musical influences: hardcore punk, no-wave, dance, kraut-rock and electronica have enabled them to create an album brimming with vibrant originality.

‘Crude Futures’ showcases their intricate math-rock melodies and complex rhythms over yelping vocals.
