This finally gets a decent re-release. Having been lucky enough to pick up an original on the Chouette label when I saw 'em live a few years ago I can safely say I'm familair with this great EP and it's now something more folks can finally enjoy. This was recorded in between the 1st 2 albums and it features the amazing Elephant Gun (which 4AD released as a 7" many moons ago) which is one of my favourite beirut songs. I love the way it sweeps you along with it's marching band mariachi feel. The brass is ever present through the EP and to be honest there's not much I can say about Beirut that hasn't been said before. Gypsy folk, mariachi, eastern european blah blah blah he's fucking great...

What their label says...
The sleeper hit of 2006, Beirut s Gulag Orkestar came out of nowhereto sell tens of thousands of copies in a matter of months andwound up on countless critics year-end lists. As a stopgap beforerecording a new full-length in Fall 2007 and as a way to capturesome current songs being performed at shows the eight-memberband checked into Sea Side Studios in Brooklyn to record Lon Gisland. These are the first studio recordings made by the entire group asampling of songs by orkestar leader Zach Condon. Lon Gislandfeatures four exclusive tunes and a full-band reworking of Gulag s Scenic World. The five-song EP was initially released onCD with the European edition of Gulag Orkestar (4AD). Asidefrom a limited-edition, mailorder-only 12-inch by Chouette (nowdeleted), this Ba Da Bing edition marks the first time the EP hasbeen available on vinyl. Zach Condon is that truly rare thing, an American in fact, a veryyoung American who turns a foreign style to his own inauthenticuses without doing it dirt. Gypsy brass as he hears it is gorgeouslylyrical because lyricism is his thing, and so he softens the threehorns on this EP not just with idiomatic accordion but with ukuleleand glockenspiel. The trumpets are cushy too, establishing a comfortlevel his melodies earn. Robert Christgau, Rolling Stone [With] a solid, pulsing group of players fleshing-out his songs,Condon opens to something less paint-by-numbers static it smore alive.
