Over the years I've managed to develop a somewhat grudging respect for Tindersticks. They produce consistently good quality music and one day I'll probably break down and just admit to the world that I actually like them. Their new single somehow manages to be both raw with a faintly garagey beat to it, yet cinematic with evocative lyrics. This track rolls along nicely with twanging guitars and a catchy backing vocal hook. The jury is out on the saxophone but it doesn't ruin it. The B-side is a much more laid back affair, just acoustic guitar, pedal steel and the very distinctive vocals. It also magnificently seems to be a Throbbing Gristle cover! Recommended.

What their label says...

* “Black Smoke” is taken from Tindersticks’ current album Falling Down A Mountain, which was released on 4AD on 25th January.

* The 7” is limited to 1000 copies for the world and is backed with “Just Drifting”, the hauntingly emotive song
that was Psychic TV’s debut single back in 1982 (and appeared on their debut album Force The Hand Of Chance).

* The band’s 8th studio album to date, it has elicited glowing reviews:
- "Quite an achievement... a feast: dense and opaque, but never sluggish or lacklustre." Mail On Sunday (5/5)
- "Tindersticks remain at the top of their game and, better still, they seem to want to play." Record Collector (4/5)
- "Stunning....exquisite....gorgeous." MOJO (4/5)
- "Falling Down A Mountain is a subtly strong album, full of self-belief and always climbing, carrying you with it." Uncut (4/5)
- "A band on top form." The Sunday Times (4/5)
- "Rare evidence that reformed bands can make records that matter." The Word
- "Another truly great Tindersticks record to add to your collection." Clash (8/10)
- "The well never seems to run dry." Rock Sound (8/10)
- "Like a vintage Bordeaux, it slips down a treat." NME
