Lightspeed Champion is back. The former testicle is back for a 2nd time to see if he can make things better with his Costello ish brand of pop. On 'Marlene', the first thing I noticed is that it doesn't feature him standing looing serious holding chickens and that. In fact he's gone for a rather pleasant line drawing of a mountain range. very tasteful and certainly less cryptic than those old sleeves. This got played in the office the other day and even though I was there I could sworn it wasn't played. I was threatened if i put it back on though as it didn't go down right well. For a come back single it's really unremarkable.... and the chorus sounds like an upbeat Gene song. There's a reasonably authentic cover of Serge Gainsbourg '69 Annee Erotic' which is so filthy it's making me wanna go down on someone now. Dirty Lightspeed.....In fact the B sides on this EP are way better than the lead track. Loads more interesting....

Love this record? Hate it? Tell us.

What their label says...

Dev Hynes, the voice, ears, fingers, flesh and blood behind Lightspeed Champion, is back with a brand new single, Marlene, on 25th January 2010.

Majestic and epic, Marlene is full of headlong melodies and expansive arrangements, where the grandness is frequently allowed to loom rather than thunder, yielding to passages of repose, before the infectious rhythm kicks in again.

Dev Hynes plays every instrument on all three b-sides himself - a concerto; a cover of Serge Gainsbourg’s 69 Année Erotique (completely in French!) and his version of (He’s) The Great Imposter, written in 1961 by eighteen-year old Sharon Sheeley, the fiancé and songwriter of Eddie Cochran.

Marlene is a little glimpse of what’s to come from Lightspeed Champion’s forthcoming album, the much anticipated follow-up to 2008’s Falling Off The Lavender Bridge, details of which are to be announced soon. For a sneak preview of Dev Hynes in the studio point your eyes below!
