I've not been a big fan of Vampire Weekend's previous output, it just sounds like 'Graceland' played badly by some New York hipster indie types, but I've had a change of heart on first listen to new single 'Cousins'. Dynamically this is a totally crazed, upbeat, afro-psyche-groove attack!! It's short, sharp and insanely tight little tune featuring some notable guitar riffage and some cheeky percussion parts, it's a vast improvement on previous efforts that's for sure. The vocal has an Alex Turner meets David Byrne feel and overall the track sounds upbeat and full of joyful enthusiasm for the creative process. B-side 'California English Pt.2' is pure Pro-Tools madness and sounds a little like Animal Collective in a whimsical, spaced out kinda way.... It's also pretty decent. So, Vampire Weekend deliver the goods this time, enjoy it while it lasts.

What their label says...
Vampire Weekend will release a new single, Cousins on 11th January. Cousins is the first full single to be released from the band’s forthcoming second album Contra (also released 11th January).
As with Horchata – the track the band recently made available as a free download to announce their return – Cousins is unmistakably Vampire Weekend while providing another glimpse of the more progressive, multi-layered sound of the new album.
