My friend Charlotte named her dog after Scout Niblett, and believe it or not, Scout Nibbler is probably one of the loveliest canines out there, proper daft-as-a-brush but with some rather intriguing human-like traits. It's nice to se the lady herself returning to the fray with a new album, 'The Calcination of.....', especially as she is one of the few truly authentic modern blues voices out there. Less accessible than her most obvious musical peer PJ Harvey, Ms Niblett centres on dense, purging, stripped-to-the-bone music, a kind of haunting electrified folk that explodes occasionally, caustically into a skeletal rock music like a geyser, unexpected but always welcome. Her emotive, pure voice is always beautiful to me, she howls less like a banshee undergoing an exorcism these days, sounding richer, more soulful & mercurially focused than ever. If you've never had the pleasure of Scout's company then this new album is as good as any, if not better than before. Drag City CD/LP, Albini is at the helm again, oh yeah!

‘The Calcination Of Scout Niblett’ is the fifth soul-searing
record from the musical entity known as Scout Niblett.

People come to Emma Louise ‘Scout’ Niblett for the joy of
a scalding hot bath of sound amidst stark, bluesy emoting —
and she won‘t let them down this time. But something has
shifted. Having made herself a record or two‘s worth of
celebration ballads and moody freakouts, she seems to be
hearing that call from within to feel for other things. And so,
