Those trusty folks at Golden Lab have managed to secure the release of the new The Howling Hex record, entitled 'Rogue Moon'. It's a mind boggling collection of Neil Hagerty (Royal Trux) originals coupled with tracks by various artists produced by Hagerty. The opening track 'Dayfever' is a prime example of what's on offer here, a bizarre synth orientated space jam that sounds unlike anything I've heard from Hagerty. 'Rogue Moon' goes on to explore country, noise rock, psychedelic, funk, electro and spoken word with a determined lo-fi enthusiasm. These tracks sound amazingly refreshing to me, from the swampy Beck-esque groove of 'The day 'red alert' said my name' to the backward riffage of 'Hotel Riot' there is something here for all ears. Delightful stuff.

What their label says...

Neil Hagerty is the former guitarist/singer with Drag City heroes Royal Trux and has spent the past six years carving out an incredible groove with The Howling Hex. This is their seventh album to date and the only one to be released on a label other than Drag City who agreed to this one-time-only release after The Howling Hex found a sympathetic ear in Golden Lab

Four tracks penned by Hagerty, the rest of the total twelve by a variety of collaborators - all produced by Hagerty, all weird and amazing. There's bits of bizarre sound art, broken poetry, a coulda-been-a-90s-dance-anthem, rock songs, a ballad, and tons of sweet guitar playing. The title track alone is worth the price of the record, with its haunting, counter-melodic, phasing synth and guitar arrangement.

This is very much a producer's record with Neil Hagerty at the controls and it shows. It has the same level of ingenuity and oblique techniques as his work for Bill (Smog) Callahan, Edith Frost and Royal Trux, nevertheless it is very much a coherent, insanely individual record that sounds as contemporary as it does enduring, sitting somewhere between Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti, early Silver Jews and Robert Fripp and Brian Eno's 70s collaborations.

The LP is on 140g black vinyl with beautiful sleeve art produced by Lucy Jones of www.itsmountpleasant.com and is strictly limited to 500 copies. We are incredibly proud to be able to issue this wonderful record and it's already moving fast, so get in early if you want copies.
