My fave indie release of the week is by Sheffield "supergroup" The Millipedes who are proud to present their debut set 'Shake Your Bones' as three 7"s & a CD counterpart in a sturdy art box! Now, they've got a real powerful, raucous tub-thumping sound which manages to seamlessly blend Surf, Ska , Rockabilly, Garage & Punk Rock into this feral, slinky, sexy force. One minute they're doing voodoo rock 'n' roll which sounds like early Sons & Daughters grooving with The Cramps, then just as you're settling into this buzzing, dirty party sound after a few tracks, they throw the irresistible ska-pop of 'Do Do Do Dare Dare Dare' at you which is utterly stonking in its simplicity & cross-appeal (quite Poppy & the Jezebels sounding!) Then there's tracks that could have fallen off a Be Your Own Pet Album if it wasn't for the fact this lot sound so defiantly old-skool, utterly unpretentious and hopelessly English! This is timeless stuff, every song a hook-loaded floor filler, the production by Sheffield super-engineer Alan Smyth is bursting with energy & the whole package is just cool as fuck, badges & everything. What their label says...

Sheffield garage rock super-group The Millipedes formed in 2007, originally featuring a singer called Milly. The singer didn’t stick around but the name did. The Millipedes boast pseudonymous members of bands including The Long Blondes, Smokers Die Younger, Velodrome 2000 and Thee Motherfuckers who have previously released records on labels including Rough Trade, Angular, Thee Sheffield Phonographic Corporation and a Vogue compilation curated by Karl Lagerfeld.  Yes, they are suave.

Playing music that sounds like the raw punk of The Sonics mixed with the sleazy rhythm & blues of Andre Williams, The Millipedes can do super-stupid horror themed punk trash and seedily beautiful blues, sometimes at the same time.  They are also available for your wedding band needs—the sight of a tent full of well dressed drunks dancing to “Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow” is not easily forgotten.

In foolhardy defiance of the increasing non-physical nature of musical product The Millipedes debut album Shake Your Bones is being released by Odd Box Records as a series of 3 7” EPs that when collected form a box set with amazing original artwork by Sheffield comic artist Oliver Allchin.  The EPs are compliment with a CD of all the songs that make up the 7” singles with an additional bonus song ‘You’re Too Much’.  The tracks that make up Shake Your Bones were partially produced by legendary Sheffield producer Alan Smyth (Pulp, The Arctic Monkeys, Reverend and the Makers) at his 2Fly studios in Sheffield.
