OVERVIEW:
Turning Down Water For Air, James Yuill's debut album for Moshi Moshi, marked out the young Londoner as an inspired musical alchemist. Taking a passion for both the emotional songwriting and atmospheres of artists such as Nick Drake, Radiohead and Sufjan Stevens and the visceral beats and dynamic rhythms of Justice, Chemical Brothers and Aphex Twin, James fused these seemingly disparate influences into a magical sound of his very own.
After a hectic 18 months taking his live show around the world, playing everywhere from the Radio One Big Weekend to a beach in the Bahamas and supporting the likes of Zero7, Peter Bjorn & John and Royksopp, James is preparing to head back to the studio to record his next album. But before he returns with a follow up to Turning Down Water For Air, these two EPs take one last look back at this fantastic collection of songs, giving them a sonic re-fit in the process.
James Yuill's music is a finely blended cocktail of one part camp fire introspection and one part disco ball madness, but for the Earth and Fire EPs he has allowed his musically split personality to fracture, re-imagining the original tracks for either the dancefloor or the sofa. The resulting versions offer a fascinating companion piece to Turning Down Water For Air, and give some intriguing signposts as to where this talented young musician may travel next.
Seeing James Yuill live is a truly unique experience: one minute you're drawn in to the tender simplicity of his voice and acoustic guitar, the next minute your head's spinning and your feet are moving to the dazzling array of beats and effects pumped out by James's laptop and boxes of tricks - not bad for a one man show that fits neatly into a reconditioned guitar case. In the spirit of the EPs James has also been doing a select number of 'Fire' shows, where the focus is firmly on the dancefloor.
