Bonny Billy is up to his old tricks again, rejuvenating the extensive back catalog via alternative styles and musicians. In this case the bonny one teams up with The Picket Line, a youthful and highly skilled group of bluegrass players. 'Funtown Comedown' is probably the best Oldham album title I can remember and besides his covers album with the members of Tortoise, this is sounding like the best of his collaborative efforts. The Picket Line bring youthful enthusiasm and vigor to a bunch of classic Oldham cuts with 'May it always be', 'Wolf among men' and 'Idle hands are the devil's playthings' sounding particularly sweet. All recorded live at 'Funtown' (not just a place but a state of mind), these reworking's really benefit from a fresh lick of bluegrass paint. Certain revisiting of previous works have fallen flat for me but, in the case of 'Funtown' William Old Ham is on to winner. Long live the confederacy!

What their label says...

Funtown is a place as much as it is a place of mind, and it was in this place that Bonnie ‘Prince’
Billy and The Picket Line combined forces to play music for a community of people.

The songs of Bonny Billy & The Picket Line
are music for an afternoon, an evening, a night.
Songs to echo off your head when you wake up
the next morning.

Live in front of friends and family is the way of
Funtown. It was as fun as it sounds and more.
The Picket Line added a youthful spark to the
picking traditions that some call Bluegrass and
some call music. The band comprised of the
‘Prince’ alongside Oscar Lee Riley Parsons,
guitar and singing; Bob Dixon, electric guitar;
Jonathan Kempf, mandolin; Cheyenne Mize,
fiddle and singing; Danny Kiely, double bass;
and of course, the Mayor of Funtown himself,
Bradley Reinstedler, on banjo.

‘Funtown Comedown’ is released on vinyl
only.
