Oddbod waxing of the week has to be this 1950s album by Julie Andrews & Martyn Green ft. Moondog. Of course, back in the day, no-one really gave much of a fig for a blind pagan wizard percussionist. Julie was all the rage then, much like Cheryl Cole is now. Except she was a tad posher. So the original sleeve of 'Tell it Again' featured just his brief resume on the rear of the sleeve but very little else. The new reissue has MOONDOG splayed in massive fuck off text with lil' old Julie baby relegated to second billing. Funny how the eccentric "weirdos" end up basking in a warm pool of lasting credibility eh? This record is actually a complete diamond, the ol' Viking's shuffling, cyclic percussive rhythms are topped with Andrews & Green's blithering children's poetry & nursery rhymes executed in that delirious, demented sing-song style beloved of the upper classes all those decades ago. Without the hypnotic pads & distinctive tappings of Mr Moony, we'd still be left with a real curiosity as two inane, grinning famous people vye for the undivided attention of your poor, ragged child in a creepy call & response trill-fest. I think the Moonster gives the "project" a real human, earthy vibe, his beats beautifully distinctive & utterly mood altering as always. Ltd LP & CD through Poppydisc.

What their label says...

In recent years Moondog, the Viking of 6th Avenue, has become perhaps the ultimate musical cult figure. But Moondog has always been hip to those in know.  In the late 1950s and 60s his fans and followers included Leonard Bernstein, Charlie Parker, Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington and Bob
Dylan. In more recent years he's been celebrated by the likes of Damon Albarn, Jarvis Cocker, Philip Glass, Teenage Fanclub, The trashcan Sinatras and Mr. Scruff. Reissues of his singular body of work have been gleefully received by devotees of that unique Moondog thing.
Here now, finally, reissued on glorious vinyl and CD editions is perhaps one of the rarest, most enchanting and eccentric albums of the whole Moondog canon (and that's going some). Perhaps the most extraordinary and unexpected thing about this album is that it features the voice of Julie
Andrews. 'Tell It Again' was reissued in 1957 and so this is Julie Andrews pre-Mary Poppins, pre-Maria Von Trapp and was made while she was wowing Broadway as Eliza Doolittle. Although she wasn't yet an international superstar, she's still very much the Julie Andrews we know, prim and proper in
manner and pure of voice. Also on board is English veteran of stage and screen Martyn Green. Andrews and Green take on the roles of adult children, reciting and singing nursery rhymes and playing games over a musical background that could only be the mighty Moondog. On 'Tell It Again'
is unique use of percussion playing his signature rhythms and accompanying woodwind are as elegant and wild as ever.  The sweet circular songs sung by Andrews seem to be pointing the way to 1971's classic 'Moondog 2'.
This lovingly re-mastered reissue with original sleeve notes is a must for all lovers of Moondog, of Julie Andrews and children of all ages.
