Worryingly starting with some kind of 'real' African jungle sounds, Taken by Trees' new single 'Watch the Waves' thankfully recovers its footing. The plucked guitar and dreamy lady vocals are astonishingly lovely. I'm very worried about the pan pipes though, this kind of cultural tourism is concerning. It seems the lady in question has shunned western recording techniques in order to travel to Pakistan to record, yet the record sounds like it was recorded in a shiny state of the art studio in the Suffolk countryside with a couple of panpipe sounds from an old Casio SK5 sampling keyboard tacked on top. It reminds me of when Sting used to hang out with that guy with the big tongue. Oh the lady is the the one from The Concretes etc.
