Spoono, former star of the excellent Blackest Rainbow endorsed tour EP which flattened us here @ the Towers, has a fine little 7" on GPS. I don't know how he manages to make so much transcendental noise spill from his 12 string but he bloomin' does, On 'Frozen Music' he adopts this absorbing style where he suddenly errs heavily on the fat strings suddenly to create this looming bass-ey distortion within the shimmering, chiming ragaisms and quick fire picking/strumming. I think technically, he's more hearty & satisfying than out & out virtuoso, obviously he's been heavily influenced by Fahey's Takoma school but the way he injects his style with so much vigour & intensity must be heartily commended. Phil says this is "right up his street" which sounds a little exhausting as his street is about 5 miles long. 'What's Around the Corner? More Corners' is a more trippy, freeform piece that begins ambling along like an incredibly happy dog, the chirpy, twangy acoustic guitar being massively soulful & chatty, whilst an old wibbly keyboard gives the impression of some eccentric travelling band strolling down a kaleidoscopic country lane, hazy in the sunshine, then the locals come out clapping and then they realise they have an entire village caught up in their spell, following them, arms raised ecstatically, pied piper-like, spellbound by the delirious sonic fallout! Definitely more the winning side for me, but then, they're both winners, housed in the usual loving GPS package, textured sleeve wrapped in posh printed acetate....300 only of this beaut!
