Immensely press shy, 2009’s blogger’s delight and in huge demand with the cream of international rock and pop (Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Digitalism, Britney!!!), Memory Tapes appears to be some kind of internet phenomena. Forged from one man and two identities (Memory Cassette and Weird Tapes) Memory Tapes has gathered further momentum after signing to Loog on the recommendation of The Horrors. With all this hype you’d expect some primo shizzle from this debut wax-o-release. Well, I missed the hype but I’m enjoying the record. ‘Bicycle’ is a fine example of an experimental pop single that makes no effort to pander to its potential audience. Sure it’s an upbeat mixture of dreamy electronica and psychedelic indie pop but it somehow sounds very fresh to my flu-ridden ears. It’s got a pleasing vocal, some cool New Order style guitars and even a choir of backing vocalists. ‘Plain Material’ is a simpler but no less effective number showcasing Memory Tapes guitar and vocal skills before wandering close to Animal Collective territory for the crescendo. Even The Horror’s own ‘Cosmic Dub’ remix of the A-side is pretty decent. A vague yet pleasing little slab I tell thee.

Love this record? Hate it? Tell us.

What their label says...

Last year the hugely press-shy Memory Cassette aka Weird Tapes released material for free via his myspace page and it proliferated super quickly

across the cooler American blogs.  Memory Cassette was the dreamy, psychedelic electronica and Weird Tapes was more driving, fizzy French sounding electro.  Both identities figured highly in the Tips for 2009 online. Having this dual life with two separate identities proved cumbersome so they were merged under one name, MEMORY TAPES.

Faris from The Horrors heard the music online and urged former label Loog to sign them.  This has resulted in this limited single release and The Horrors Cosmic Dub remix of Bicycle. Many other acts have noticed the rise of Memory Tapes and asked for remixes.  Recent recipients include Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Digitalism and Britney Spears, and Memory Tapes has been remixed by London’s Friend among others.
