Sometimes you wonder what all the fuss is about Kieran Hebden. Ok I've wondered this for years and years and years and years. That said I did enjoy that collaboration with Burial earlier this year. He also has a record label called Text and releases the odd thing here and there. The latest release is a 12" of remixes of his latest prodigee One Little Plane called 'Lotus Flower'. The A side is a mix by Avus which I think is superb. At first it seems nothing is happening with some techno beats and cut up disembodied vocals but slowly it all comes together in a minimalist but hugely evocative track. It seems to be the space in the track that creates the atmosphere and its almost unfinished sound works in its favour. On the flip Joe Goddard (i think he's the fat one out of Hot Chip??) does a very very similar mix using the exact same vocal segment. Its so hard for artists to create different sounding mixes from the same sound files and so this one probably suffers from being heard second. That said I'm still fairly unimpressed by its messy 4/4 techno. You also get a third track which I presume is the original. By this point you are so sick and tired of hearing the same vocal segment you want to go and throw the thing in the river. The track is very simple with vocals over percussion and has similarities with Mirah, School of Seven Bells and a bit of Tom Tom Club.

What their label says...
* This is a limited 12" vinyl release on Kieran Hebden’s (Four Tet) Text records label. 500 only for the world. * Two new remixes of one of the stand out tracks from the debut album by One Little Plane that came out last summer. * The first mix is by Avus who is one of the artists on James Holden’s Border Community label. A beautiful piece of melodic techno that has been getting lots of play at Border Community nights since late last year. * The other remix is by Joe Goddard from Hot Chip. Techno with a strong UK garage influence. Following on from the amazing remixes he has done for everyone from Gang Gang Dance to Kraftwerk. * 1. Lotus Flower (Avus She’s Singing Remix) 2. Lotus Flower (Joe Goddard remix)
