Look what I have here its a split 7" single between Darren Hayman and The Wave Pictures. Both cover songs by Bruce Springsteen. Darren Hayman does an indie/electro-pop version of 'Girls in their Summer Clothes' and its not too bad really in a Casiotone for the Painfully Alone/Magnetic Fields type way. On the flip side The Wave Pictures attempt 'If I Should Fall Behind'. The singer has that kind of quivery voice like Jonathan Richman. Its a lovely lovely song but I kind of wish the performance was a little less effected. There's some bongos present which worries me more than you will ever know. Enclosed with the single is a 10 track CD of The Wave Pictures. All of the songs are Bruce Springsteen songs done in their shuffly lo-fi almost skiffle like sound. I can't quite decide whether this is done with total love for the material or with smirks on their faces. It straddles that line. The highlight is undoubtedly a Violent Femmes like take on 'You're Missing' I'm not sure if the world needs a whole album of The Wave Pictures covering old Bruce but what it does do is highlight the wonderful lyrics which can sometimes be lost amongst the blood and bluster of the originals.
