New Monolake 12"! I've been waiting for this time to come. 'Atlas' wastes no time in kicking the beat in and it feels a tad disorientating, a little too fast on 45rpm and a tad too slow at 33rpm.. There's definitely scope to play around with the speed if you've got pitch shifting capabilities. Taking the 45rpm on the label as gospel this is a bit of a banger by their standards with its speedy two-step groove (reminiscent of the ace recent 12" from current Monolake member T++ on Apple Pips). It's a superbly atmospheric tune as you might expect, the whistle coming in every now and again making me feel like a samurai warily entering a haunted forest grove.. 'Titan' on the flip features more of a classic Monolake sound with your echoing dub techno stabs and the sound of a decaying machine's breath a la 'Static'. Pure class from these lads, would you expect any less?

What their label says...

Finally the new Monolake 12” is here…  MONOLAKE is back with two nicely sculptured, bass driven and atmospheric tracks. It's hard to put a label on a MONOLAKE record, their sound really defines its own genre. Certainly not minimal, a genre that never really fit MONOLAKE releases, not really dubstep even if the tempo matches, too beat driven for ambient, too straight for breakbeat, too complex for techno.
