It seems that every week of new releases brings us another record on the might Woodsist. This week i've been presented with the new Psychedelic Horseshit record titled 'Shitgaze anthems'. I don't know much about Psychedelic Horseshit but they seem to be on top of that tape distortion, lo-fi garage rock sound that everyone seems to be striving for nowadays. These guys are most definitely taking the piss yet still come of sounding pretty good, in a shitty sort of way of course. The back cover declares that 'Shitgaze anthems' is a '.....nice safe compilation of B-sides from the upcoming album TOO MANY HITS out summer 2009! (intended for the U.S audience)' so you get the general idea. 'Dreadlock Paranoia' is a prime example of the kind of daftness to expect starting out pure Buzzcocks 'Ever fallen in love' before descending into skankin' reggae piss takery. This is pretty similar to the likes of The Frogs or The Cows who enjoy nothing more than deconstructing and ripping on their respective music scenes. If you think the emergence of psychedelic pop and garage rock as commercially viable forms of music in 2009 seems kinda ridiculous then you'll enjoy Shitgaze Anthems crazed commentary on the current crop of hipsters making the rounds today. Pretty fun shit yo! If you like the sound of this rekkid then you may also enjoy previous efforts 'Magic Flowers Drone' and 'New Wave Hippies' e.p's.
Love this record? Hate it? Tell us.
What their label says...
After a 2-year absence, what has happened since we last peeked in on these "shitgaze" innovators? Well, that famous "distorto-lo-fi-sound" has been popping up in quite open spaces: No Age has become the new Britney Spears, Wavves crashed in outta nowhere like a mid-90s grunge signing, and Vivian Girls are playing on the speakers in Urban Outfitter stores nationwide. Expect better production, poppier songs with druggier references, and elements as disparate as dub & emo combining to form a revionistic classic sound that is at once new & strangely familiar
