I find strings to be the most emotive instrument in the pantheon of orchestral instruments. You don't cry from hearing the sound of a tuba do ya? Rafael Anton Irisarri had an album out on Miasmah in '07 and now the slothlike neo-classical genius has managed to muster up enough new material in 2 years to fill both sides of a 7" single. That's no criticism BTW, I'm impressed somebody has the restraint & high quality control to not put out CDrs every 5 hours like the many working in the ambient/noise spheres. 'Hope & Past Desires' is a thing of incredible beauty with the occasional "typewriter glitch" noise being the only constant amongst the swathes of dream-like strings, gently soaring & swooping like melancholy doves. 'Watching As She Reels' adopts a wistful piano & emotive jingle approach with occasional mournful snatches of string section panning in & out. A full album of this stuff'd have me on the floor in tears so I'm glad he's kept it brief. Thankyou Thrill Jockey, the pleasure has been all mine!
