I'm not entirely convinced by Malcolm Middleton as a solo artist but he sure knows how to write a proper power single. 'Red Travellin' Socks' is a lush indie romp bolstered by super professional production and massive instrumentation. It sounds like a reinterpretation of some ancient Bruce Springsteen single with a tendency toward the bold and the epic. This is a big single! B-side 'Whistle' is a more laid back and less ambitious in scope which makes me think how far Malcolm has strayed from his Arab Strap roots. This is a heartfelt sea shanty of an ode to loss and works much better for me than the big budget A-side.
