Ant here easing my self in gently with some sonic lube from arguably Ireland's finest intelligent dubstep producer Boxcutter. Known to his Guiness supping pals as Barry, the man has for a while been carving out his own niche within the dubstep template. Isolated on his island from the trends that come and go within the genre he really has a unique approach. His pristine productions sparkle with shimerring melodies and trick beats. 'A Familiar Sound' is a cross between the stuff on 'Oneiric' and his album under his own name with jazz/ funk flourishes it features Kinnego Flux dropping some vocals on the soulful tip that fit in well with the production. The bassline is restrained and only growls occasionally. You get an instrumental on the flip too. 12" on new label Kinnego Records.

Full colour sleeve. Boxcutter’s work, due to its bass-led and rhythmically 2-step nature, is often categorised as dubstep, although in style and idiosyncracies has more in common with IDM artists such as Squarepusher and μ-Ziq. Together with Kinnego Flux the Belfast based band/ensemble.Funk and soul music with electronics Using instruments, vocals, computers and hardware synths and modules. A Familiar Sound flows seamlessly with stabs of sound rolling over each other without ever quite meeting. It's totally unique, and has been blowing minds after it was first heard on Scuba's Electronic Explorations mix. This track is so creative. Props to Boxcutter for fusing smooth RnB with a deep and dark drop that takes the tune right into the unexpected.
