James Yorkston is back on the old animal theme trail with his 'Tortoise Regrets Hare' 7" on Domino. The Scotsman is in fine form accompanied by Nancy Elizabeth (nee Cunliffe) on vocals. There's a wonderful earthy feel to the track but the synthetic bass just takes it somewhere else. I cant 't grasp exactly what he's on about (this coming from a Welshman like myself!) but he's clearly off on one. His buddy King Creosote does his own version on the B-side which seems to be the thing these days. Y' know covering tracks instead of remixing them. Actually I didn't notice Nancy Elizabeth's vocals on the original but there's a female vocal here which makes me think someone may have cocked up the credits on the sleeve. (Fall) Heads will roll. I never wrote any of the bits in brackets here. Some nugget felt the need to tamper with my review.

What their label says...

· Returning with his trusty Athletes, along with some
legendary English folk names - Norma Waterson, Mike
Waterson, Marry Gilhooly and Olly Knight - there is much
to mine for James Yorkston fans of old and new within his
‘When The Haar Rolls In’ album; all the ambition, beauty
and pathos of his previous albums sweep through with the
soothing, lush arrangements of all sorts - the timpani,
clarinets, violins, vibraphone, concertinas, bull bass, prepared
pianos, mandolins, bouzoukis, banjos and wine glasses.

The single is bookended by November / December UK dates.
The regional dates will be James Yorkston solo shows with
support from Pictish Trail and Rozi Plain, whilst the London
show sees James playing a full band show with The Athletes,
with support from a Malcolm Middleton acoustic set.
