Department of Eagles are Daniel Rossen (of American indie-darlings Grizzly Bear) and his old friend Fred Nicolaus. In 2003 they released their debut ‘The Cold Nose’, which brought them much critical acclaim. Now five years later, the pair release its follow-up ‘In Ear Park’. Written and recorded around Daniel’s Grizzly Bear commitments, the album is a real labour of love. With the aforementioned band, it shares a whimsical, and intelligently-skewed Americana style, leading the way to comparisons to quality contemporaries: “I guess if there’s an emerging newish music in Uncut’s world, it’s a kind of gauzy, harmonious strain of Americana typified this year by the Bon Iver and Fleet Foxes albums and, a little while back, by the second Grizzly Bear album. I trust you’re not sick of this stuff, because there’s another good one on the way” (Uncut). However, with Department of Eagles comes a feeling of nostalgia, where the beautifully crafted songs flow as a wave of pretty-melancholy weaved sophisticatedly with youthful playfulness. The stuff memories and dreams alike are made of.
