Luca Venezia is on a mission to leave his mark. Born and bred in Manhattan, the man known as Drop The Lime and Curses! is the leader of the unstoppable momentum of a New York scene loved around the world and now coming to the attention of the masses.
From his humble beginnings as a choirboy to a childhood obsession with 50’s Rock‘n’Roll, the 25 year old has always put music first. There’s a special aura about him, a star quality, and just one look at the gold-toothed, tattoo sporting young dude with his 50’s brycreemed quiff and you realise he’s no studio geek. This guy’s a personality.
Founder and member of the NYC based ‘Trouble & Bass’ crew, a tight group of DJ and Producer friends that run the highly influential club night and label of the same name, his influences range from Brian Eno to Rockabilly (he’s well known for his 50’s Doo Wop and Soul sets) to Sonic Youth to Wu Tang and beyond. The music he plays out? All of it, alongside the heaviest, bassiest and (at times) nastiest dance music you’re likely to hear anywhere, mixed in with his original compositions with his bad boy Sinatra vocals.
With this behind him, 2008 has been a year of serious breakthrough for Mr. Venezia, starting with a remix for Pop darling Robyn, who was so impressed with his work she took him on tour, introducing him to a huge new audience and opening his eye up to the potential of Drop The Lime. Next up was joining the elite crew of DJs to be given a Main Room residency at London superclub Fabric, who instantly offered him the spot after being blown away after visiting Trouble & Bass in New York.
Add to that a massively successful set at Coachella, a huge headline tour of North America and Australia, and UK dates at Lovebox, Creamfields and V festival, with official remix duties for Moby, Blaqstarr, Armand Van Helden and Midnight Juggernauts squeezed in. Oh, and he managed to write a few songs with Diplo and Herve. We believe the title of the hardest working new artist might be in order!
Moving onto the present and the future, we have ‘Hear Me’, a brand new single and a taster of what’s to come from his album (scheduled for June 2009). Dropping the on his own Trouble & Bass label, Luca explains “With every album I’ve made I’ve moved closer and closer towards creating songs rather than "tracks"... this time around, I am making music that moves people emotionally in their own place and physically out dancing in the clubs. A song like ‘Hear Me’, brings together all my influences - rock, electro, old school rave, jungle… and my gospel soul singing background!”
Backed up with remixes from two of 2009’s most exciting names; AC Slater and Buraka Som Sistema, it’s quite a package. Remember the name, you’ll be hearing it a lot more from now on…
