What their label says...

Jamie Sutherland, Rory Sutherland, Dave Smith, Andy Keeney, Arne Kolb, Ian Turnbull and David (Gill) Fothergill formed Broken Records in December 2006 in Edinburgh, Scotland. Using a range of instruments including guitars, bass, violin, cello, accordion, mandolin, piano, trumpet, glockenspiel and drums, they create a sound combining traditional European folk with modern Scottish alternative music.

Their debut single ‘If The News Makes You Sad, Don’t Watch It’ released on cool indie label Young Turks led the band to be tipped for greatness from such varied publications as NME, The Guardian, The Sun, The Times, Q, and Drowned In Sound amongst others. They were also invited to do a session at Maida Vale for Radio 1by Huw Stephens and were Steve Lamacq’s single of the week on 6 Music. They found other radio support from XFM Scotland and Radio 1 Scotland.

Their 2nd single ‘Slow Parade’, released on the Fandango label received R1 support from Zane Lowe, Steve Lamacq, Huw Stephens as well as John Kennedy on XFM. They did sessions for Vic Galloway on Radio 1Scotland, Jim Gellatly on XFM Scotland and Mark Radcliffe on 6 Music. They have had continued support from NME, The Fly, Q, DIS as well as broadsheets, tabloids and online.

In terms of live  they have done 2 national tours and picked up a number of supports, including the Futureheads, Editors, Idlewild and Twilight Sad. They have also done a number of festivals at home and abroad including London Calling (Amsterdam), Latitude Festival, Rockness, Leeds Festival, Hard Rock Calling, Wickerman Festival and Hydro Connect.

In Autumn 2008 the band embark on a 3rd national tour and release their 3rd indie single ‘Lies’ on Distiller Records. They have a number of forthcoming shows including Levis Ones to Watch showcase that will air 15 mins of them on Channel 4 and press and radio are eager to support this record.
