As if they weren't absolutely mad enough, now we have The Lovely Eggs. Brett thinks Phil is a massive cunt for admitting this lo-fi, ramshackle mess of an EP ('Have You Ever Heard the Lovely Eggs') is "growing on him". I'm with Phil here. I'm too old to be so cynical and I reckon Peel would have loved the skewed gobbledegook lyrics mostly sang by a screechy woman-child with her male partner in crime comin' on like a DIY Hazlewood/Calvin Johnson to her possessed Nancy (Spungen). Like a 9 year old's insane poetry set to shambling 'K' records indie that posiitively radiates with charm, spunk and a relentless crapness that is pretty tongue in cheek. I think the bloke is muttering on to someone else half the time making it sound like a cross between Prolapse, Moldy Peaches & Joy Zipper. They go from seriously trashed anti folk to balls out lo-fi punk. Brett hates the gutter kindergarten aspect cos he is the God of serious rock (or because it's done in such an irritatingly knowing way here, with vocals that go RIGHT THE FUCK THROUGH YOU - Brett ;)) but we're all a bit retarded us older sorts so are quite taken with such a determined & demented racket. 5 tunes, one yellow vinyl 7" on Cherryade. What their label says...
Very limited 7” on yolk yellow vinyl. This is a 5 track EP. ‘The Lovely Eggs are Holly and David. Together they write music which is quite odd. Actually, its funny, sad, magical, brilliant (and maybe a little odd too). Do you remember those messy paintings you did when you were 7? I bet if you went back and looked at them now you might quite like them. Thats how I feel about The Lovely eggs - they manage to take all that spontaneity, roll it up into a ball and make something wonderful out of it. They remind me a little of the japanese band Yumbo (look them up!), or a less bearded Incredible String Band. On their myspace it says they both play 'other stuff'. If only more bands would play 'other stuff' then music would be much more fun!’ Here are some review quotes: ‘The Lovely Eggs music has a cracked-childhood deranged sweetness to it. On first listen, their record is a trifle startling, but then you get all endeared by the simple kid-fi honesty of their songs.’ (Kitten Painting) / ‘What makes the Lovely Eggs so loveable is their undeniable quirkiness and refusal to adhere to the notional song craft form book, their songs belie an affecting twinkling cuteness that's wrapped in an impishly light headed naivety that partly recalls a less introspective and self examining Daniel Johnston and a sprightly though ostensibly oddball take on the Shaggs. Factor into that a strange fondness for 70's styled kid TV (as noted by the snoozing rustic motifs a la Camberwick Green running through the ever so cute 'belles of Lancaster') and you have an acutely disarming and demurring duo on your hands who it seems just want to play with your head and spend hot sunny afternoons getting sick on sherbet and pop.’ (The Sunday Experience) / ‘This is the kind of band who are inspired by the excellence of the past and the kind of band who will inspire the excellence of the future.’ (Unpeeled)
