I picked up this Sunken Foal job 'cause it's on Planet Mu and I fancied a bit of wonky electronica, turns out the joke's on me since this business is largely acoustic, serene and highly contemplative. Surprisingly untreated piano and guitar sounds are the main order of the day, often piling upon each other in increasingly delicate formations only to come crashing down in quiet, understates avalanches. The layering and edits on here are generally the only clue that point towards the label that Fallen Arches belongs to as it's largely beatless, with only a few tracks offering some drum skitters. Imagine the slowest, most organic tracks from people like Aphex Twin and Venetian Snares crossed with a nature reserve or something. Occasionally things take a turn for the dull post-rock but that apart this is a really, really nice album.

What their label says...

*  Dublin act Sunken Foal consists of one Duncan Murphy and occasional friends and collaborators when they record or play live. Fallen Arches is their amazing debut album of intensely evocative guitar-based electronic music, with piano, strings and occasional vocals which build up and then collapse under the weight of digital rhythms that twist and turn at every juncture.

*  Sounding not unlike an Irish Fennesz playing mandolin, these twelve organic-sounding compositions have a definite plucked feel with the ever-present detuning adding a slight unsettling mood which feels right at home on Planet Mu.
