This is the debut effort from a London lady calling herself thecocknbullkid called 'On My Own Again'. Musically it reminds me a little of 604-era Ladytron, it's got that sort of future-retro thing to it but with more of a hip-hop feel.. You can hear bits of M.I.A. in there definitely. She's got a good voice too, genuinely soulful and interesting in a way that goons like Joss Stone could only ever dream of.. The lyrics seem to be your usual love and loss kind of business without being horribly saccharine, not an easy trick to pull off. The B-side is a bit more of a party tune that may or may not be about breasts.. Quite a brave decision not to make that the lead track really since it's got more instant appeal but all in all, very promising stuff.

OVERVIEW: “Freudian kitchen-sink stories set to Timbaland-lite beats. DIY pop brilliance” - NME

Born in Hackney, East London, to Ghanian parents, thecocknbullkid (no gaps, all lower case) aka Anita Blay has spent the past 2 years exploring all manner of influences (from Moz to Madonna, M.I.A to Little Richard), forging a wholly distinctive sound, and marking herself out amongst the know-alls as one of the most inventive and exciting new acts to have sprung from the East End in a fair old while.

Marking an official career ‘kick off’, her debut single ‘On My Own’ will be released on Need Now Future Records - Metronomy’s 7” label - in July.  A collaboration with producer and Metronomy founding member Joe Mount, it’s both a sad and joyous tale of growing ‘out’ of someone. A matter-of-fact, electro-pop hymn to breaking-up and moving on - minimalist Kelis-style beats (a worthy comparison), Anita’s distinctive vocals, and armfuls of soul.
thecocknbullkid’s style, it should be said, resides firmly on the dark side of pop. There’s an almost Trojan quality to it - Anita’s ever-expanding repertoire is a subversive, sometimes sinister, and always sublime mix of sex, death, ugliness, wit and depravity, found amidst The Everyday and pegged onto supremely inventive pop melodies. “I’ve always thought pop should never just be saccharine” she says, “It should be black and tortured too. There’s no point otherwise.”

Having been holed up in the studio over the past 4 months, hooking up with a number of different producers along the way (Joe Mount, RadioClit, Mark Brydon, Dave McCracken, Lexx, and Kwes amongst others…), thecocknbullkid has been busy working up an arsenal of sonic ideas into fully fleshed out tracks. The results are thus far, ridiculously promising….Watch this space.
