Funckarma's new one is descriptively titled 'Dubstoned' and it pretty much does what it says on the tin. It's got all those cliched dubsteppy noises you've probably come to expect by now but they're worked into the tracks in slightly different ways, there's much more of an electronica thing going on to keep things interesting, it reminds me quite a bit of Milanese and some of that other Planet Mu dubstep stuff which is much more the end of the genre that I enjoy. Some of the synth lines are pretty cool, almost veering into noise territory in the way that it makes it sound like your speakers are grinding to a halt. Solid.

Dutch brothers Don and Roel Funcken unveiled their first Funckarma EP in 1999 on D.U.B., since when they have unleashed a fury of releases on labels including Neo Ouija, n5MD, U-Cover, and Hymen, as well as their prodigious work under other guises such as Cane and Quench, and their collaborative hip hop project Shadow Huntaz. Their signature bass-driven precision sound compositions, encompassing influences from hip hop, jazz, reggae, dub, soul and all forms of electronic music, are carefully crafted and constructed into tight rhythmic forces with a keen ear for texture and structure. With the global dubstep virus now infecting all forms of electronic music, it was a natural evolution for the Funcken brothers to take strands of the meme and splice it to the DNA of their own productions, creating a mutant hybrid of lurching instrumental hip hop with floor shaking bass and super punchy intricate razor sharp rhythms. The five-track ‘Dubstoned EP 1’ is the first in a series of releases they have planned in this broad style, and will be promoted with two rare UK appearances, one at Plastic People in London and another at Bristol's The Cube Cinema, with support from Hyperdub's Ikonika and Highpoint Lowlife's Fisk Industries.
