What we say

Rating: happy This record left our Phil feeling happy.

So after that last Brian Jonestown Massacre album here's a brand new 5 track mini album thing on 12 Tonar which is an Icelandic label. These tracks were all recorded during the sessions of the last album... 4 are exclusive to this release. There's a bunch of alternate versions of tracks from the last album which are a bit useful. It took me a while to find this on the site as Ant had called it Just Like Licking Jesus which I think is a better title. On the credits he thanks Iceland, Bjorks mum, black people and women.... go figure. More My Bloody Valentine isms on here, more 60's pastiche and it all fits in nicely with the last album. I believe the term is a sister record. If you liked the album then you'll more than likely be wanting this sucker. Limited 180 gram wax.

What the label says:

A Split Label Release Between 12 Tonar (Iceland’s Number One Independent Label Originally & “a records” Anton Newcombe’s own record label .
This mini album of 5 songs (4 never released before) runs over 27 minutes recorded in Reykjavik . The first track of this release features the vocals of Icelandic artist & film maker Unnur Andrea Einarsdottir . The Brian Jonestown Massacre are undertaking an extensive world tour beginning in June 2008 (see below) .
The Brian Jonestown Massacre has been somewhat of a musical commune for many respected musicians over the years, a band from the 1990’s that has spurned other great bands ever since. Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, The Warlocks, The Silver Rockets, The Black Angels, The Ravenettes, The Dilettantes (to name a few) are all part of this musical family tree. Indeed, this is a band that has witnessed many incarnations, since its inception in San Francisco in 1995.
Two dozen band members later and numerous “ups and downs” (some have been famously sensationalized in the media, the one thing that has always remained consistent for this psychedelic collective, is front man Mr. Anton Alfred Newcombe. A man and artist many are eager to dismiss as obnoxious and unworthy of the attention he receives. Others however, deem him simply as vulnerable in this world he roams and hugely misunderstood whilst doing so. Like many prolific and artistic “madmen” before his and our time, dare we sum all of the above and categorize Newcombe as a one of the musical geniuses of our time?

About the humble LP:

The LP is the daddy of formats. 12" inches of sheer joy. The LP adds to the glory of the 12" record as it can be played at a slower speed (33rpm instead of the usual 45rpm for singles), consequently more musical joy can be had. Played on a decent deck the sound of an LP is about a million times better than any other format. They look fantastic...... a nice gatefold sleeve with a information rich inner sleeve will keep you entertained for hours even before your stylus has chance to make eye contact with it's 12" prey. An essential part of musical heritage which will never be forgotten. It still does play at a multitude of speeds but as it's recorded to be played slower they normally sound ridiculous sped up. Though double albums can make up for this slight inadequacy by ramming more tunes into your ears for your money. Utterly essential.
