What we say

Rating: ecstatic This record left our Phil feeling ecstatic.

As well as being a hugely famous actor in The Royal Family, Ricky Tomlinson also stars in Voice Of The Seven Woods. Well he is Voice of The Seven Woods as such. Over the years he's released tons of ltd CDR's and that and here's a reissue of a rare early thing not even I've heard before. The Journey is it's name and Kning Disk in Sweden have come up trumps this week for releasing it. Ltd release on vinyl and CD. This is Vo7W at his most introspective. No big brash rock... just some tasty psych guitar work along the lines of Six Organs to blow your cosmic wedge to. It's hands down beautiful crafted psych folk which has a real tenderness and sucks you into it's world. On first listen I wasn't too sure but I stuck with it, gave it a few more listens and then it hit me. A lot of the best records I never get first time. Stick with it and you'll discover why Kning Disk have decided to re release it as it's really beautiful. You get 6 tracks on this ltd 10" and CD and it's kind of a long EP/ Mini album...... Listening to it through headphones gives it an extra dimension as well... man this is good... I can see why it's called 'The Journey' as it proper takes you on one....- Phil

What the label says:

A new release from Voice Of The Seven Woods; Having self-released a slew of CD-Rs to universal acclaim, Tomlinson aka Voice of the Seven Woods has seen his stock rise immeasurably. One of those sold-out CD-Rs has now received a reissue, which will go some way to sating the demand for anything bearing Tomlinsons nom de plume. "The Journey" is now being made available on both CD and 10vinyl, with both formats limited to 999 copies. Eschewing the raga-folk and Eastern-tinged delights of his debut album, The Journey confounds expectations and thrills with its intense yet airy folk-rock and instrumental drone. It finds him far from a comfort zone, and the molten guitar parts which adorn lead track Solitary Breathing hiss with a brooding menace, constructing an autumnal atmosphere which pulses throughout. The title track, a deftly finger-picked folk song, coaxes a circular melody from a deeply resonant acoustic guitar, weaving enchantingly beautiful sounds which twist and turn in upon themselves, while Breaking in the Moonlight chimes with an unsettling but strangely compelling feel; distant yet utterly captivating. 3am Home could be a distinctly odd lullaby, with its delay-drenched guitar creeping into the back of your mind, revealing an elegant sense of warmth which belies its eerie exterior. Meanwhile, the closing untitled track sees him winding repeated melody patterns into sparse, homespun folk. Far removed from the Turkish psych and Krautrock inspirations which have denoted other Voice of the Seven Woods releases, this is an integral part of Rick Tomlinsons ever-growing discography and one which will provide a wonderful addition to your collection. Written and recorded by Rick Tomlinson. Mastered by Rune Johansson. 10" sleeves are all handmade

About the humble 10":

The 10" sits somewhere in between the 7" and 10" (kind of like a wierd cousin). This awkward variant exists for no other reason aside from to be different from it's other family members. It can provide less music than a 12" but more than a 7". It's almost like a budget 12" or a posh 7". Either way it's wierd and it needs sorting out. Maybe it's quirkyness has helped it carry on defying all rules and convention? Importantly though it plays at a multitude of speeds so it is still quintessentially a total bargain (albeit a total freak of a bargain).

'blame it on the dog why don't you'
