As per usual I'm writing these few at home on my new CD player bought from some dodgy geezer on e-bay. No remote control and a 20 year old plug? Now, COME ON! Sounds like god's stereo though so who am I to question hehehe! First to christen this rapidly re-homed gadget are Dark Captain Light Captain who are sublime melodic folk pop candy to these sore ears. Lo:AF seem to pick these gifted, strange acts out of the ether like drifting audio magic darts gliding slowly through the air and then gently slip them into the consciousness with hardly any fanfare, safe in the knowledge they'll reach the appropriate sets of eager lugs in their own time. And time, is what music this rich, pure & satisfying, dissolves. The 'Circles' EP has that easy, flowing & incredibly subtle psychedelic edge so beloved of bands like Tunng, the vocals soothing and dreamlike, the guitars like twinkling spectral whisps caressing you into another awareness & loads of spacious atmospherics that envelope your heart. This is mature and rewarding stargazing melancholy with no pretense or concession to fashion. Just four near perfect nuggets that demand repeated listen. Insert, close yr eyes and cherish these harmonic beauties because this is one of your all-too-brief soundtracks to the summer. Production is just great, these sweet tunes have been tweaked by the hand of Robin Proper-Sheppard to name one! Such lovely artwork too......The softly psychedelic sound of Dark Captain Light Captain, mesmeric, delicate and slightly twisted. The Circles EP is a taster for the upcoming full length album andmarks the transition from their original more minimal bedsit vibe,to a much more muscular live sound with brass section and the legendary beats of Chin Keeler of Quickspace fame giving thesongs a gently pulsing almost Can like drive.Recent shows at Lovebox, 93ft East and Indigo2 have seen theband getting deeper and stronger, weaving the songs into a hauntingweb of acid tinged folk with sweet harmonies, chiming guitars, spaced out brass and touches of electronic deviance. The songs on the EP have been lovingly polished and broughtinto focus by the team of Robin Proper-Sheppard (God Machine,Sophia) and Kenny Jones and offer a sweet taste of therighteous sound of Dark Captain Light Captain. Rejoice!
