Werewolves - Es

Es by Werewolves

4...according to our on Wed 28 May, 2008.

Werewolves are the latest NY hopefuls to hit the Norman stereo and utterly delight this old fool as they've got a bit of that old yank sound from 15 years ago, Opener 'Pill Box' comin' atcha like a mid-period Pavement college rock chug with these wonderful wonky off kilter guitars wobbling all over the place like they've got a mild dose of Polvo then these nonchalant, yearning vocals that make you wanna take the singer home & look after him. In fact they've got that same sense of lo-fi slacker grandeur over these 4 compulsive sides that makes fellow New Yorkers The Strokes & Walkmen so cherishable & vital. But equally there's touches that remind me of (very) early Hood & long forgotten Geordie chord manglers The Lavender Faction, obscure US bands like St. Johnny & early Built to Spill. The 'ES' EP has these subtle, unfussy songs that get under your skin, shambly, discordant & exciting like all those scratchy old obscure US imports you used to buy. So to cap, this is a great 4 tracker over 2 7"s. If we hadn't already been beaten to it by another shop i'd be fighting for this as SOTW!
