At Home With..., by Aidan Baker + Ultra Milkmaids (CD on Infraction)

This record left our Phil feeling happy.

This week we got a batch of older Infraction releases in. Hey we don't have time to review them all but we thought we'd make an effort and review one of 'em to show willing. It's by Aidan Baker & The Ultra Milkmaids and it's called 'At Home With'. I like the idea of ultra milkmaids.... my mind is racing with white frilly bonnets, huge milk urns and Moll Flanders style busty wenches. Am sort of wishing I was Aidan right now.... or maybe Aidan is 2005 as that is when this was released and I'm pretty sure the milkmaids would have left him for greener pastures (they're a fickle bunch). Here's a lovely album of ambient guitar drone and fuzz which makes Mingus think of Fennesz and me think of Tim Hecker. That kind of warm fuzzy thing... You get sucked into it's ample charms and before you know it, the album has finished and you're wanting more. As ever excellent stuff from a label which hasn't done any wrong so far (unless they've been murdering children or something?? Best keep an eye on the news...). Having said this I've just looked at the inner sleeve and the ultra milkmaids appear to be your dad with a leopard skin fez on and some guy who looks like Mark Lamarr.... The disappointment I'm feeling is tremendous.
