I had a good feeling about this White Williams effort on Double Six from the artwork, a colourful messy drawing a little bit in the style of Lightning Bolt's 'Hypermagic Mountain' cover and although it sounds absolutely nothing like that album, I'm still quite impressed. A really lo-fi sound and lazy vocals have been done so many times before but 'Violator' is really made by the prominent and insistent bassline and the bizarre little noises added in for punctuation, it makes for an instantly recognizable sound all of his own. The 'Hearts of Darknesses' remix on the other side is pretty wicked too, sounding like that bass is being played through a ZX Spectrum that his little brother's spilled apple juice inside. Exculente.

White Williams is Joe Williams – a 24-year old who spent his teenage years within the arson-prone Cleveland DIY scene. The past few years have seen White Williams tour with Gregg Gillis’ Girl Talk and Dan Deacon, and gradually gravitate from noise to electronica with a strong hint of pop. Since he started releasing his own music on Tigerbeat 6 in the US, he has become something of an underground cult hero across blog sites and US press alike. ‘Smoke’ was released on the label in the US, but the new revised tracklisting version of the album soon followed on Double Six Records worldwide.
