What we say

Rating: happy This record left our BRIAN D feeling happy.

Another West Yorks act are The Sugars who are signed to Bad Sneakers. They've definitely got a good, full retro rock sound but there's a little too much Ocean Colour Scene/Weller in it for me, yet I reckon they're trying to get a bit of a Fifties rock and 60s garage/soul vibe to their tunes. Unfortunately the production is too modern and dulls the potential edge from 'Black Friday'. I think they'd like to be The Von Bondies (I love the feisty male/female vocal face-off but this all reminds the office of Do Me Bad Things. Then again if 3 people can sound like 9 then they must be 3 times more powerful? I like the flip 'Isle of Sirens' which is more of a Chris Isaak brooder with some nice echo-laden twanging and a powerful vocal. They're worth catching live too!

What the label says:

‘Black Friday’ is taken from the forthcoming album ‘The Curse Of The Sugars’, released in June. The album is produced by Will Jackson (Pigeon Detectives, Cribs).

About the humble CD single:

Another digital format and even though they can hold 80 minutes of information (like a CD album would) record companies only fill up a small portion of the disc. Sometimes only 1 or 2 tracks on there totalling 5 minutes or so. It's like going to a restaurant and getting a plate of food with 2 green beans on and wondering where the rest of your meal is. Sometimes they're lovingly packaged though and when the music is good then you're into a winner. Also you get videos on there sometimes which you can watch on your computer. That is excellent.
