When I first heard the Wild Beasts singles a while back I thought the band were a complete joke. Mainly cos of the ridiculously high falsetto vocals which shatter frail wine glasses from a distance of 100 yards away (do we still use yards?). So here I am confronted with the album which I wasn't particularly looking forward to. Domino do the business here with 'Limbo, Panto' and they 'usually' know what they're doing (aside from the Blueskins...). So I listened to the album from start to end and it started to make a lot more sense. The ridiculous vocals are still there in tact..... terribly theatrical darling. In fact the whole thing is very dramatic..... darling. Who does it sound like? Cock knows.. they're certainly treading their own path with some timeless sounding quirky indie tunes covered in extremely high 'man vocals'. On The Devil's Crayon the singer sounds just like Tony Hadley which is no bad thing as Spandau Ballet were really very popular in their time. What with classic hits like Musclebound and True. Still singing about devil's crayons is pretty cool. I'm gonna listen to this some more....
