What we say

Rating: happy This record left our BRIAN D feeling happy.

Now I've always had time for Hot Club De Paris. I know they're great because their records just shuffle out steadily rather than shit out for 6 months then stiff. Slow burner bands are always more convincing. Moshi Moshi know they've a long term prospect on their hands with this Liverpool based 3 piece. Their songs are an irresistible blend of skitterish afro-flecked guitars, dynamic, feral art-pop & schizo freewheeling harmonies. They fit perfectly into the current (real) indie scene & have that zesty life-affirming vibe that blessed early Futureheads, Maximo Park, Larrikin Love & the (original) Mystery Jets sound (Don't get me wrong, I dig the new 'Jets direction but feel they've compromised their innovative tendencies, unlike these chaps!) I think the crisp, airy production & playful, intertwining instrumentation really stands true, loaded with vibrancy & passion, with the vocals as homely & chant along as Alex Turner's or Paul Smith's. I reckon this band are as sonically astute as the Arctics' but with maybe the quirky zing of Vampire Weekend. 'Live at Dead Lake' is their second album, chock full of strong, melodic songs that demand your attention. If you've been under whelmed by the Futureheads recent album, take a chance on this sophomore effort, it's a proper treat! Initial pressing has an extra CD ROM type thang with acoustic tracks and live videos! Oh hats off for the Minutemen cover too!!!

OVERVIEW: ‘Live at Dead Lake’ is the second album from art-pop experimentalists Hot Club de Paris. Expanding on the quick-fire tech-ridden pop punk blasts and wit-fuelled commentaries of 2006’s Drop it Til it Pops, Hot Club de Paris continue to explore their use of skewed rhythms, accomplished musicianship and poetical themes. Since Hot Club de Paris embarked upon their punishing tour schedule two years ago (playing with artists and bands such as Jamie T, Maximo Park, Battles, Foals, The Who), the three-piece have developed into an almost single-celled organism and have become one of the tightest and entertaining bands on the world’s small and sweaty stages. After spending the entire summer of 2007 in their hometown of Liverpool working on their follow up, the band called upon Chicago producer Brian Deck (Modest Mouse, Iron and Wine, Ugly Cassanova, Sea and Cake) to document their new songs. The first single to be taken from the album is ‘Hey! Housebrick’- released on May 26 –documents the creeping claustrophobia of small-town living and the destruction and devastation produced by such negative forces. Guest vocalists from Liverpool twee-sters Puzzle were called upon for backing vocal duties and dainty handclaps. If someone was to ask who it is that influences Hot Club de Paris, the band would probably give you a list that looked something like this: Owls, Don Caballero, Billy Bragg, Tim Etchells, XTC, The Minutemen and Mike Watt, Storm&Stress, Joan of Arc, Talking Heads, Cap N Jazz and John Fahey.
