What we say

Rating: happy This record left our Phil feeling happy.

This week we have 2 releases on the Make Mine Music label. The 1st one is by a chap called The Doldrums. Well actually he's called Dylan. The Doldrums would be a pretty silly first name for someone right (apologies to anyone who may actually be called that). The Mirth And Songs EP is quite a diversion from previous Make Mine Music releases. It has similarities in the fact it's instrumental and largely atmospheric but the music here is comprised of wierd rhythms, guitars, harmonicas (I think?). It's really quite unusual if I'm honest. The percussion in the 1st couple of tracks really threw me, layers of syncopated rhythms.... it's almost like a more electro acoustic Proem or something. Unusual stuff but very good. I guess an easy comparison is it's a bit like Northstation of a less poppy Four Tet...Limited to 75 copies and it's only available from us or Make Mine Music in the UK!

What the label says:

The Doldrums is Dylan Golden Aycock, a multi-instrumentalist and producer from Tulsa, Oklahoma.  The son of an artist mother and singer-songwriter/folk radio DJ father, Dylan found himself more drawn towards the rhythms found in hip-hop than roots music during his teens, but later began exploring connections between the two styles of music in his own compositions.

Drawing on a rich pallette of electronic and acoustic sounds, Dylan uses computer to process and seamlessly blend old recordings of himself, family and friends playing a range of instruments (guitar, pedal steel, dobro, Fender Rhodes, analogue keyboards and drums), all clearly and lovingly recorded in an abandoned railway warehouse in downtown Tulsa, with environmental field recordings and loops.  Dylan’s aptitude and talent for melody, texture and composition, and his ability to capture a sense of time and place is very apparent in these extraordinary and beautiful instrumental pieces.

Make Mine Music is proud to be able to bring these sounds to a wider audience.  A full-length album will follow later in 2008.
